Bespoke Work
Commission a Maki-e Piece
Commissions generally begin from ¥200,000. Final pricing depends on the object, size, motif, materials, and complexity of the work.
International inquiries, translation, estimates, and logistics are handled by Genji Atelier.
Inquiry
Begin a conversation
Tell us a little about the piece you have in mind. There are no fixed answers here — an inquiry is the start of a discussion, not a commitment.
How It Works
The commission process
From first inquiry to a finished piece in your hands, each commission moves through eight quiet stages.
- 01
Inquiry
You share the object, motif, and intent. Genji Atelier translates and relays this to the artist.
- 02
Concept discussion
Form, motif, materials, and feasibility are discussed and refined together.
- 03
Estimate
A written estimate is prepared, covering the work, timeline, and international handling.
- 04
Deposit
A deposit confirms the commission and reserves the artist's time. Production is scheduled.
- 05
Production
The piece is made by hand through the lacquer and maki-e cycle, over weeks or months.
- 06
Progress update
Photographs and notes on the work in progress are shared at meaningful stages.
- 07
Final confirmation
The finished piece is documented and confirmed before the balance is settled.
- 08
International shipping
Genji Atelier handles inspection, packing, and insured international logistics.
The artist creates each work. Genji Atelier supports international communication, estimates, inspection, and logistics — and does not handle payment on this site.
